general of signal troops. Gabrielyan held lead positions in the signal
units of the 2nd Caucasus Division. Gabrielyan participated in the Great
Patriotic War from the very first days: initially he was assistant to
the commander of signal troops of the 47th Army, later he headed the signal
unit. Gabrielyan fought in the Crimean, Ukrainian and Belorussian fronts.
He was awarded with two Red Star Orders, the Order of the Patriotic War
of the 1st and 2nd degrees, other medals.
GAZIEV ERAST GROGOR (1937 ) - A doctor of technical sciences.
Born in 1937 in Baku to a family from Artsakh. In 1954 Gaziev graduated
from Moscow Institute of Energy. In 1963 he participated in the scientific
research of water constructions in France. During 1966-1969 Gaziev worked
as a UN expert in Mexico. Concurrently, he delivered lectures on fragmentary
mechanics at the National University of Mexico. In 1980 Gaziev received
the degree of a doctor of technical sciences at Moscow Institute of Engineering
and Construction after Kuibishev. Gaziev is the author of over 130 scientific
works.
GAREGIN BES (GAREGIN BAKHSHI SARINYAN) (1910 ) - A writer, worker
of arts. Born in 1910 in Shushi. In 1933 he graduated from the Department
of Historiography of Yerevan State University. During 1941-1943 Garegin
Bes was the secretary of "Soviet Literature" magazine. From
1949 through 1955 he worked in the Theatrical Society of Armenia. Bes
was member of the Writers' Union of the USSR since 1936. In 1975 he received
the title of the honored worker of arts of Armenia. He was the bearer
of the Order of Red Banner, Friendship of Nations and Patriotic War of
the 2nd degree.
GHARIBYAN GRIGOR MARGAR (1924) - A Physicist-theorist, academician
of the Academy of Sciences of Armenia, doctor, professor. Born in 1924
in Tiflis to a family from Shushi. In 1948 Gharibyan graduated from Moscow
State University. From 1959 he worked at the Institute of Physics of the
Academy of Sciences of Armenia. In 1973 he received the title of an academician-secretary
of the Department of Physics and Mathematics of the Academy of Sciences
of Armenia. His scientific work relates to quantum electrodynamics, astrophysics,
and cosmic rays. Gharibyan has been awarded with two Red Banner Orders.
GASPARYAN MICHAEL LEVON (1935) - A doctor of Philology. Born in
1935 in Moscow to a family from Artsakh. In 1957 he graduated from Moscow
State University after Lomonosov and worked in the Institute of World
Literature after Gorki. In 1977 he received the degree of a doctor of
philology. Gasparyan was acknowledged as one of the best Soviet specialists
in the area of translations from Greek and Latin into Russian. The publication
"Library of Ancient Literature" is one of his major works. Gasparyan
is the author is the famous book "Essays on History of Russian Verse".
GRIGORYAN ARAMIAS VAGHARSHAK (1917-1980) - A doctor of medicine,
professor. Born in 1917 in Arajadzor village of Martakert region. In 1941
Grigoryan graduated from Yerevan Medical Institute and soon thereafter
was recruited to the Army. He was awarded with the Order of Patriotic
War of the 2nd degree, two Red Star Orders, other medals. In 1952 he received
the degree of a doctor of medicine and the title of a professor in Moscow.
Grigoryan worked at the 1st Medical Institute after Sechenov. In 1962
and 1963 he was awarded with a silver and gold medals at the All-Soviet
Exhibition. For more than 25 years Grigoryan was the scientific secretary
of the Operating Committee of the All-Soviet Union of Surgeons and member
of the Supreme Accreditation Commission.
GRIGORYAN ASHOT TIGRAN (1910) - A doctor of Physics and Mathematics,
professor, academician of the International Academy of History of Sciences,
vice-president of the International Union of History of Scholastic Philosophy,
an honored worker of sciences of the Russian Federation. Born in 1910
in Peri village of Martuni region. A graduate of the Department of Mechanics
and Mathematics of Moscow State University. Participated in the Great
Patriotic War. During 1950-1954 Grigoryan worked at Moscow State University.
He is the author of over 280 scientific works. In 1960 he became an associate
member, and in three years, member of the International Academy of History
of Sciences. In addition, Grigoryan was member of the Academy of Sciences
of Spain. He worked as a teacher for more than 30 years at Moscow State
University, Moscow Institute of Polygraphs and the Open Polytechnic Institute.
For 12 years Grigoryan held the position of a vice-president of the council
of history of international science and philosophy, and in 1977 he became
the elected president of the same council at the 15th International Congress
in Edinburg, Scotland.
GRIGORYAN ROLAND ANASTAS (1931) - A doctor of medicine, professor.
Born in 1931 in Karaghbiur of Askeran region. In 1957 Grigoryan graduated
from Yerevan Medical Institute. From 1961 he worked in the surgery department
of Yerevan Military Hospital. After receiving his Ph.D. in 1964, Grigoryan
joined Yerevan Medical Institute. In 1991 he became a doctor of medicine.
GRIGORYAN SAMVEL SAMVEL (1930) - A doctor of Physics and Mathematics,
professor, academician of the International Academy of Austronautics,
a deputy of the Supreme Council of the Armenian SSR. Born in 1930 in Vank
village of Hadrut region. In 1953 he graduated from the Department of
Mechanics and Mathematics of Moscow State University. In 1957 he defended
his Ph.D. thesis and from 1958 Grigoryan worked as a deputy director at
the Institute of mechanics of the Academy of Sciences of Armenia. Grigoryan
is the author of over 250 scientific works. He is the founder of the modern
theory of dynamics of mining minerals and soils. In addition, Grigoryan
is an academician of the International Academy of Astronautics. Since
1992 Grigoryan has headed the Institute of Mechanics of the Academy of
Sciences of Armenia.
GURGEN HOVNAN (HOVHANNISYAN) NERSES (1910 ) - A writer, civil
servant. Born in 1910 in Shushi. In 1938 he graduated from the philological
department of Moscow Pedagogical Institute after Lenin. During 1938-1840
he worked as a teacher at Yerevan Institute of the Russian and Foreign
Languages. During the period from 1946 through 1964 Hovnan was the director
of the Institute of Literature after Abeghyan at the Academy of Sciences
of Armenia. Hovnan received the degree of a doctor of philology in 1963,
and in 1964 he was awarded the title of a professor. Hovnan is the bearer
of the Orders of the Great Patriotic War of the 1st and 2nd degrees, Red
Star and Badge of Distinction.
GANDZASAR TEMPLE: The administrative, political and spiritual
center of Artsakh. It is situated on a hill on the left bank of the River
Khachenaget (Martekert Region of MKAO as of January 1, 1988). The etymology
of "Gandzasar" (which means "a treasury mountain"
in Armenian) is connected with the silver mines beneath the hill. In the
place of the old temple (mentioned in the sources of the 10th century)
a new one was erected by Prince Hasan Jalalian and sanctified on the Vardavar
Day on July 22, 1240. Gandzasar served as the residence and family sepulcher
of Hasan-Jalalian dynasty. Gandzasar was the Mother Seat of Aghvan from
the 14th century until 1815 when following the instruction of the Russian
authorities it became metropolitan see, and later, since 1857 the Eparchy
of Artsakh. The catholicii of Aghvank cooperated with the Karabagh meliks
in activities of administrative character, as well as during the liberation
wars. For the first time the appeals of the eastern Armenians were sent
to the Russian Tsar from Gandzasar on receiving Russian citizenship and
military assistance for the liberation from the Persian-Turkish yoke (18th
century). In particular, Yesai Hasan-Jalalian, the Catholicos of Aghvan,
played a significant role â ýòîì äåëå (at the beginning of the 18th century).
Panah Khan who settled here and his successors were in severe opposition
with the catholicii of Gandzasar.
