EAST - CAUCASUS MOSLEM REPUBLIC: The Moslem National Council promulgated
the declaration of independence of the Turkish Tatars of East Transcaucasus
on May 27, 1918 in Tiflis. The new state formation was assigned the name of
East Caucasus Moslem Republic. However, shortly thereafter the new republic
was renamed into the Azerbaijani Democratic Republic, as recommended by the
English and Turks, since "no one could refer to a previous analogous
example of any national formation in the past".
