TOPONYMICS
FIZULI REGION was established in 1930. Its territory
covers an area of 1386 km2.
Fizuli borders on Hadrut and Martuni Regions of NKR, Jebrail, Aghjabed and
Bailagan Regions of Azerbaijan, as well as Iran along the River Arax. In the
Middle Ages the western territory of the present Fizuli was part of Artsakh.
The territory of Fizuli Region, similar to those of Partav, Aghjabedi and
Bailakan regions, has a plain relief due to which it the authentic population
of Fizuli, the Armenians, relatively earlier fled from there.
A small number of monuments of the Armenian culture was preserved in the western mountainous part of the region which borders on Hadrut Region of NKR, i.e., in the areas where the Armenians were able to survive for a longer period. As a matter of fact, a small group of Armenians still resided in Khoger Village of Fizuli Region until 1988.
