OUTSTANDING PEOPLE OF KARABAGH

IOSIPHYAN ANDRANIK GHEVOND (1905 ) - A doctor of technical sciences, Hero of Socialist Labor, laureate of the State Prize, member of the Academy of Sciences of Armenia. Born in 1905 in Tsmakaokh of Martakert region. In 1930 he graduated from Baku Polytechnics Institute. Before 1941 Iosiphyan worked in the Electric-Technical Institute in Moscow where he defended his thesis in 1940. During

1941-1943 he headed the Moscow Electric-Technical Plant. In 1945 he was elected associate member of the Academy of Sciences of Armenia, and a member in 1959. Owing to his efforts, the Electric-Mechanical Scientific Research Institute was established. Iosiphyan was the director of the said institute till 1973. During the period from 1950 till 1953 he was the vice-president of the Academy of Sciences of Armenia. Upon his initiative, the branches of the Electric-Mechanical Scientific Research Institute in Leningrad, Tomsk, Yerevan and other towns. Iosiphyan was awarded with three Lenin Orders, two Red Banner Orders. In 1962 he was granted the title of the Hero of Socialist Labor.

ISRAELYAN GEVORG AVANES (1920- ) Born in 1920 in Nerkin Aznik village of Askeran region (Nagorno Karabagh). During the Great Patriotic War Israelyan fought in the North-West and 2nd Baltic Fronts. He was the first to be awarded with the Order of Distinction. In addition, Israelyan is the bearer of the Red Banner Order, Red Star Order and a medal "For Service in Battle".

ISRAELYAN VALENTIN SOGHOMON (ISRAELYAN VAGHARSHAK) (1903- ) Born on April 20, 1903 in Trnavarz (currently Karmir) of Askeran region (Nagorno Karabagh). A Major General of Justice. A lawyer by specialty. Israelyan was the deputy attorney general of Moscow Military District, the attorney general of the South Front, the Transcaucasus, Volgograd and 4th Ukrainian Fronts. Awarded with a Lenin Order, Red Banner Order, two Orders of the great patriotic War of the 1st degree, as well as Czechoslovakian and Polish orders.

ISAHAKYAN BAGRAT HOVHANNES (1904 - )
Born in 1904 in New Nakhichevan to a family from Shushi. A Major General of armored forces. Began his military career in 1920, served in the Armenian armed forces, the 66th Caucasus Cavalry Regiment as an assistant to the head of staff. During the Great Patriotic War he was the commander of a regiment, division, later he served in a number of military districts. For heroism in the battle Isahakyan was awarded with a Lenin Order, two Red Banner Orders, an Order of the Great Patriotic War of the 1st degree, Red Star and medals.

ISAGULYAN VACHE HOVHANNES (1893-1973) A doctor of Chemistry, professor, academician of the Academy of Sciences of Armenia. Born in 1893 in Shushi. In 1921 Isagulyan graduated from the Institute of Trade. He worked as a teacher at Moscow Institute of National Economy (1924), the Chemical-Technological Institute after Mendeleyev (1931-1932), the Institute of Chemical and Gas Industry (1933-1946). During the period from 1942 till 1946 Isagulyan taught at Yerevan State University. In 1946 worked in Moscow Institute of Oil Industry, Chemistry and Gas. He conducted research work on obtainment of aromatic substances.

ISAKOV HOVHANNES (IVAN) STEPAN (1894-1967) Born in 1894 in Ajikend village of Kars Oblast to a family from Artsakh. Concluded the Naval Cadet Courses in Petrograd, served in the Soviet Navy. Participated in the sea battles against the German fleet in the Baltic Sea when a way was laid for the Soviet ships from Gelsingforse to Kronstadt. An Admiral of the Fleet of the Soviet Union from 1953. A Hero of the Soviet Union from 1963. An associate member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR from 1958. An honorary member of the Academy of Sciences of Armenia from 1967. Awarded with six Lenin Orders, three Red Banner Orders, an Order of the Great Patriotic War of the 1st degree, an Order of Ushakov of the 1st degree, two Red Star Orders, orders of Yugoslav, Poland, etc.
